Important information
Mati Palmi is an Italian artist who grew up in South America, in a family severely affected by the military dictatorship of the 70’s. This experience shaped her determined attitude and gave her a deep understanding of the importance of the essential, something that became evident in her work. She later moved to Scotland, where she studied at Edinburgh College of Art.
Her minimal compositions interrogate the subtle emotion that is automatically inherent in even the simplest of abstract gestures. The sparseness of her work makes it elusive and spontaneous, yet they appear bold and precise. Each detail and stroke becomes an essential component that contributes to the arrangement as a whole. The balance of the elusive content supplemented with careful mark-making allows for an introspective and emotional experience.
Old furniture and pianos come alive again in intricate constructions, and her delicate craftsmanship only stresses more the longing for the world lost.
